The story
La Provence at Hoofdstraat 109 in Driebergen-Rijsenburg holds one Michelin star (2026) for its classic French cooking. Owner-chef André van Alten runs the kitchen with his wife, hostess-sommelier Tanja Klok.
Van Alten has led the restaurant since 1995, and the team received its Michelin star in 2011. The kitchen is open, and the cooking stays rooted in French technique while taking in contemporary ideas and seasonal produce. The house story runs from a vending-machine snack bar to a starred dining room, and one amuse-bouche still nods to that past.
The à la carte list changes with the market. Recent starters include North Sea crab with Dutch asparagus and ponzu, and a terrine of goose liver with brioche and stuffed morel. For two, there is saddle of lamb cooked in coarse sea salt with artichoke, honey and thyme (allow 45 minutes). A six-course seasonal menu is also served, and on Saturday evenings it is the only option. Vegetarian dishes are possible, vegan ones are not.
Klok's wine list leans toward organic and smaller European producers, and the team offers non-alcoholic pairings as well. The dining room is modern and spacious, with generously set tables, and in good weather meals move to the terrace. The Lekker500 placed La Provence 86th in 2026, noting a loyal clientele that returns often.
