The story
IJssel Restobar is a French restaurant at Worp 2, 7419 AD Deventer, on the riverbank beside the IJssel. Gault&Millau scored it 13.5 in 2026. The modern French cooking is built for sharing, with bites, starters, mains and desserts ordered in any combination.
Chef Wouter van Leeuwen leads the kitchen, and there are no set menus. Guests assemble their own meal, and dishes are meant to be passed around the table. Jannis Brevet, formerly of Inter Scaldes, helped design the menu and trained the brigade. The French kitchen gives close attention to vegetables, herbs and edible flowers from the restaurant's own garden.
The bites list includes oysters in three styles, among them a Rockefeller with spinach, Parmesan and garlic. Reviewers singled out an oyster Bloody Mary with marinated celery and tomato foam, and a duck liver crème brûlée served with brioche and tomato jam. For mains, the tournedos Rossini comes with truffle, spinach and red wine sauce, and a 400 gram dry-aged ribeye is served for two. Strawberries with goat yogurt and an elderflower and vanilla sauce close the meal.
Start at the bar with a glass of wine or a cocktail, or take a table on the terrace when the weather allows. From there the IJssel runs past the door, with views across the water to Deventer's historic centre and the ferry that crosses to it. Inside, the high-ceilinged dining room has white walls, black accents and an open kitchen spanning its full width. Lekker500 listed the restaurant in its Top 500 in 2026.
