The story
Herberg de Aelderstroom occupies a 16th-century farmhouse at Kruisstraat 21 in Zweeloo, where Floris de Wever and Gert van der Kooi run a French kitchen that earned a Gault&Millau score of 13 for 2026. The building still shows fragments of its farm origins, and the dining room has the relaxed feel of a country inn.
Chef Daniek Hoogland leads the kitchen and cooks French-inspired dishes built on regional produce. Diners can choose a meat and fish menu or a vegetable menu, both served in four to six courses. He often visits each table to explain the plates, pouring the sauces over the food himself.
The Kampen lamb is a roasted loin with confit neck, served with wild garlic cream, fresh peas and a fine sage jus. Earlier, mackerel tartare wrapped in paper-thin kohlrabi leaves arrives with a carrot vinaigrette and tarragon cream. One reviewer found the garnishes slightly overpowered the lightly portioned ray wing, so the richer courses may suit a hungry table best.
Candles burn on tables dressed in white linen, and the large stable windows frame the surrounding landscape. The Lekker500 guide described the setting as a restored farmhouse with good acoustics and plenty of privacy. In summer, the garden offers a candlelit dinner among lush, carefully kept plantings.
