The story
Vena is an Italian restaurant at 46-3 Kagamiyacho, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto, awarded one Michelin Star in 2026 for high quality cooking. It occupies a converted Kyoto townhouse, run as a reservation-only lunch and dinner room.
The kitchen builds its courses around seasonal ingredients and reads Italian technique with a soft touch. Fish, meat and vegetables are finished with careful heat and sauces, and pasta is made by hand. Gault&Millau scored the restaurant 14.5 in 2026. A fellow chef who visited in 2017 noted that the pasta seasoning shifts to suit the guest, firmer for younger diners and gentler for older ones.
Hand-made tagliolini arrives in a sauce of hairy crab and sea urchin, rich and deep. The charcoal-grilled lamb is cooked gently to hold its flavor, then served with seasonal vegetables stewed in tomato and an anchovy sauce.
The townhouse holds a ten-seat counter on the ground floor and two private rooms upstairs, with Nordic vintage furniture set against the old timber. Vena opened in December 2016, and a sommelier looks after a cellar known for its vintage bottles. Staff can also serve in English and Italian.
