The story

Tan Kyoto: Japanese Kitchen on the Shirakawa, Higashiyama-ku

Tan is a Japanese kitchen at 106-13 Gokencho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, and it earned a 2026 Michelin Bib Gourmand for good-quality, good-value cooking. The restaurant sits on the east side of Shirakawa bridge, where Sanjo-dori meets the river. Its name, 丹, is meant to carry the sense of "small sincerity."

Produce from the Tango coast

Most of the ingredients come from producers on the Tango peninsula. Vegetables are grown without fertilizer or pesticides, and the rice is grown in Kumihama, Kyotango, by staff who handle every step from soil to milling. Meals follow the Japanese ichijiru sansai pattern, one soup and three dishes, served at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A house-like dining room

The building was designed by Toshihito Yokouchi, known for timber houses. The first-floor table is a single slab of bubinga, and the chairs are the "tan chair" by furniture maker Naomi Toda. The upper floor is furnished mostly with Nordic pieces. The room has no private dining areas, but the whole space can be booked for a group.
