The story
Shiro is a contemporary Italian restaurant at 2F, 287 Takoyakushicho, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto, and it earned one Michelin star in 2026. It sits on the second floor of the IDO Kyoto complex, with counter seating for lunch and dinner.
Atsushi Takenaka leads the kitchen, which moved to Kyoto in 2024 after earlier years in Shimane. Gault&Millau gave the restaurant a 15 for 2026. The dishes come from that day's ingredients, so the menu follows what the market and the farms deliver.
This spring the kitchen used field celery (tazeri) that the chef's parents harvested by hand, along with a citrus called haruka. Fagottini filled with Nanatani duck showed the richer side of the menu.
Shiro's kitchen draws on water from the garden well at IDO Kyoto, and its five principles are harmony, respect for nature, open space, simplicity and moments of emotion. After the meal, guests can order an amber eau-de-vie that has aged in barrel.
