The story
Shigetsu is a shojin cuisine restaurant at 68 Sagatenryuji Susukinobabacho, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto, and it earned a 2026 Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking. The restaurant is run directly by Tenryuji, the Rinzai Zen head temple in Saga Arashiyama.
The kitchen works entirely without animal ingredients. Vegetables, wild greens, sansai mountain plants and seaweed form the core of each meal. The approach traces back to Zen monastic practice, brought from China alongside Zen teaching during the Kamakura period. Tenryuji itself is registered as part of Kyoto's World Heritage cultural properties.
Shigetsu offers three set courses, each built around rice, soup and side dishes. Yuki has five side dishes and costs 3,800 yen, Tsuki has six and costs 6,500 yen, and Hana has seven and costs 9,000 yen. The menus change with the season. A separate 500 yen garden admission applies, and no service charge is added.
Shigetsu seats up to 250 guests, and meals are taken with the temple's celebrated garden in view. The restaurant also holds a 4 Radishes rating in the We're Smart Green Guide for 2026, which recognises its green credentials alongside its Michelin listing.
