The story
Droit is a French cuisine restaurant in Kyoto at 49-1 Higashisakuracho, Kamigyo-ku, and it holds one Michelin star (2026). The dinner menu pairs French technique with Japanese produce, and the kitchen is built around a single owner chef.
Nobuyuki Morinaga, born in Saga and raised in Osaka, moved into French cooking after university. He opened Droit in 2017 in front of the Kyoto Imperial Palace grounds. The restaurant has held a Michelin star for seven consecutive years and earned a Gault&Millau score of 16 in 2026. In 2026 Droit moved into the Institut Français Kansai.
The restaurant describes its approach as respect for French culinary tradition alongside gratitude for Japanese ingredients, linked through a sauce. The course changes with the seasons and is served with wines selected for each service. Droit also publishes notes on its sauces, including a saffron sauce, a clam and mint sauce made for lamb, and a vermouth sauce.
