The story
Qafiz is a Calabrian restaurant in Oppido Mamertina, at località Calabretto, Santa Cristina d'Aspromonte, and it holds one Michelin star for 2026. Chef Nino Rossi builds a modern Calabrian menu from the mountain produce and wild herbs of the Aspromonte.
Rossi forages with an alimurgy expert and his brigade, and the ingredients come from the Bovesia, Ciminà and the Grecanica area. He works with white fir from Gambarie, porcini mushrooms and lamb and mutton from sheep grazing on the high pastures. His cooking is precise and technical, and it carries influences from beyond the Alps that he has known since childhood.
The counter places guests beside the kitchen, so the conversation with the cook becomes part of the meal. The same space hosts a cooking class for small groups, where guests help compose the menu and then eat what they have cooked. Dishes from the Ilici grill are cooked over holm oak charcoal.
The Aspro Cocktail Bar and a wine list that starts from 25 October round out the restaurant. The 50 Top Italy guide, which lists Qafiz among its 2026 Grandi Ristoranti, singles out the cellar and the attentive service. Casa Qafiz, the historic house on the estate, has five double rooms for guests who want to stay overnight.
