The story
Villa Maiella, at via Sette Dolori 30 in Guardiagrele, holds one Michelin Star (2026) for its Italian cooking, which stays close to Abruzzo's produce and traditions. The Tinari family has run it since the late 1960s, and it also ranks 38th in 50 Top Italy's Grandi Ristoranti list for 2026.
Arcangelo Tinari cooks, his brother Pascal works the floor, and Peppino leads the third generation with his wife Angela, who looks after the pastry and leavened products. Much of what reaches the table comes from the family's own land on the ridges outside town: vegetables, noble flours and a certified black pig breed fed on their own crops.
The Potato "Chitarra" with Canestrato fondue from Castel del Monte appears on every menu and is the dish most often singled out. Elsewhere you find snails with mushrooms and bread, saragolla sheet pasta with deer ragout, and ravioli with saffron from Pizzoferrato, burrata and Caprafico lentils. The black pig from the farm has its own course. Menus run from a weekday-only small menu to a longer proposal, with wine or Champagne pairings available.
The wine list pairs Abruzzese labels with international bottles, and the glass pours are precise. Coffee is brewed by siphon, and a selection of cocktails and spirits is on offer. Villa Maiella also has hotel rooms, a stone's throw from the Maiella park, so a long dinner can end in a bed upstairs.
