The story
Sumac Grill + Drinks in Reykjavík serves Middle Eastern and North African cooking at Laugavegur 28, 101 Reykjavík, and earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026. The restaurant also holds a White Guide Fine level rating for 2026.
Chef and owner Thráinn Freyr Vigfússon leads the kitchen with chef Eyþór Freyr Haraldsson. Their approach pairs pristine Icelandic seasonal ingredients with spices from the coasts of North Africa and Lebanon. Sumac, the dried red berry that gives the house its name, adds a citrus tang and clean astringency to many plates.
The menu moves between shared plates and larger cuts. Crispy falafel comes with tahini and herb yoghurt, and grilled oyster mushrooms are served with mushroom hummus and hazelnut dukkah. Grilled lamb ribs arrive with lentils, grapes and almonds, and chicken shawarma with celeriac and dates. For a table of two, the grill platter combines lamb, chicken and shrimp. Dessert includes a date cake with date caramel and coffee ice cream.
The interior draws on the nostalgic mood of Beirut, with muted colours and worn textures. Slate flooring with timber inlay leads toward an open bar at one end and an open kitchen grill at the other. Brown leather and distressed concrete walls keep the room warm, even with the bustle of the bar. The Middle Eastern cocktail list uses fresh, exotic flavours, and the wine list draws on European, Moroccan and Lebanese producers. A private room is available for parties and meetings.
