The story
Kaltwassers Wohnzimmer, at Obergasse 15 in Zwingenberg, serves modern cuisine in a historic building a few kilometers south of Darmstadt. The Schlemmer Atlas gave it 2,5 Kochlöffel in 2026, and the restaurant also appears in the Michelin Guide as Recommended for the same year.
Marc-André Kaltwasser owns the restaurant and leads the kitchen. He trained at the Maritim Hotel in Frankfurt, then worked in the city's starred restaurants before moving back to Zwingenberg, where his family has roots. His wife Jeannette and son Levin are part of the daily running of the house.
The kitchen builds its menus around a weekly shopping list, which the restaurant publishes. A recent list names radish, smoked potato, fermented white cabbage, cauliflower, the catch of the day and veal. Kaltwasser aims to use the whole product, and he favors vegetables like those from a grandmother's garden and long-forgotten varieties. It is country cooking with a contemporary hand.
Guests choose between three and six courses, priced from €69 to €99. A wine pairing is available for each, from €21 to €42. Alongside the surprise menus there is a small à la carte selection.
