The story
Landgasthaus Hirsch, at Kaiserstraße 8 in Winterbach, is a family-run inn serving Swabian country cooking with a Mediterranean streak. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand in 2026 for good quality, good value cooking.
The Hirsch has stayed in one family for four generations. Simone and Sven Waldenmaier run it today. She grew up here, and he trained as a master cook in kitchens that include Landhaus Silberdistel, Schloss Höfingen, Cannes and Ibiza. He also holds a hunting licence and has taken a distilling course, which explains much of what reaches the table.
The Schlemmer Atlas gave the inn 2.5 Kochlöffel in 2026. It points to game from the house's own hunt, bread from the wood-fired oven and fruit brandies from its own distillery. The kitchen works with regional, seasonal products from suppliers it knows personally.
The Bib menu costs 40 euros. It starts with beef broth with Flädle and wild chives, moves to oxtail ragout in Lemberger sauce with bean vegetables and Spätzle, and ends with a scoop of ice cream. The fish menu leans Mediterranean, with grilled octopus on fennel and blood orange salad, then char fillet on morel risotto with asparagus.
A tiled stove anchors the dining room in colder months. The house also has a vaulted cellar, a beer garden, a terrace and a balcony. There is a children's playground, and dogs are welcome.
