The story
Altes Rathaus by What the Food, at Marktstraße 47 in Winnenden, Germany, serves a modern German kitchen with Asian touches. Schlemmer Atlas awarded it three Kochlöffel in 2026, praising a menu that is creative and surprising.
Patrick Schubert leads the kitchen, and time spent travelling in Japan shapes many of the plates. Traditional and classic German dishes are reinterpreted with a modern hand, built on fresh, high-quality ingredients. The Asian influence comes through in the cooking itself, not as a separate theme on the menu.
The Schlemmer Atlas entry describes a six-course signature menu. The restaurant is also tagged for farm-to-table sourcing, a set lunch menu and vegan dishes. Michelin lists it as Recommended for 2026.
The half-timbered and natural stone facade hides interiors that were renovated after the lease was signed in November 2022. Designer armchairs and table lamps set the tone in the main dining room, which seats up to 12 guests. Groups of 13 or more can book the event room "47". Outdoor seating is available, and dogs are not permitted indoors.
