The story
Stumpenhof, at Am Stumpenhof 1 in Plochingen, is a Swabian country kitchen that has stayed in the same family since 1936 and earned a Michelin Recommended listing for 2026. The former country inn sits above the Neckar in a residential area, and its kitchen works with classic regional recipes.
Küchenmeister Uli Wägerle has competed successfully at national and international cooking contests, but he has kept the recipe book of the local kitchen and cooks those dishes his own way. The house uses fresh ingredients, most of them from the surrounding region. The Schlemmer Atlas describes the cooking as upscale home-style cuisine and gives it 2,5 Kochlöffel for 2026.
The main courses lean on Swabian staples: Schwäbischer Sauerbraten with Spätzle or Semmelknödel, Zwiebelrostbraten, and Tafelspitz with horseradish sauce at lunch. Maultaschen appear as a starter with Parmesan and as a vegetarian main. Desserts include warm Apfelküchle with vanilla sauce and Zwetschgeneis. Starters range from 12.50 to 23.50 euros and main courses from 23.50 to 53.50 euros.
The house hosts private celebrations in its rooms, and the terrace opens in good weather. A separate lunch offer runs alongside the regular menu. Takeaway is also available, including vacuum-packed Sauerbraten, Maultaschen and Spätzle, which guests order by phone or email for collection.
