The story
Gasthaus Zum Engel at Kaiserstraße 65 in Rastatt serves home cooking with fusion touches. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded it 1 Kochlöffel in 2026, recognizing a historic, centrally located pub with its own brewery that has been in family hands for over a century.
Soups, sauces, noodles, spätzle, potato dishes, parfaits and creams are all prepared on the premises. The menu draws on regional and international specialties, from a light Vesper to lunch and dinner. Dishes can also be collected to take away in reusable containers with a deposit.
Philip Heim, the owner and a trained brewer, brews the Engelbier by hand under the German Purity Law. Alongside the house classics, Philip's Engelbier and Mandarin Indian Pale Ale, the brewery rotates seasonal beers such as Rauchbier, Maibock, porter, Festbier and Christmas beer each month. Guests can sit at standing tables beside the brew kettle or at tables along the fermentation and storage cellar. Beer tastings for up to 18 people can be arranged in advance.
The restaurant seats 35 in its cosy main room, with a side room for the same number. Siblings Maren Ališić and Philip Heim run the front of house. The building has been a guesthouse since 1475, and the Heim family has owned it since 1919.
