The story
Alte Schule - Klassenzimmer, at Zur Alten Schule 5 in Loitz, serves modern cuisine in a former village school that now holds a Michelin one-star restaurant (2026). The menu changes with the season and with what local producers bring in.
Daniel Schmidthaler trained in Upper Austria and later cooked at Tristan on Mallorca, in Formula 1 and at the Neuwirt in Kitzbühel. The restaurant has no printed menu card. The kitchen plans little and cooks what the region supplies that week. When you order, the team asks about your appetite, what you dislike and any foods your doctor has advised against.
Der Feinschmecker, which awarded the restaurant a 3 in 2026, described a summer menu of char with watercress and rhubarb, and venison with peppers, apricot and verjus. Dessert might be carrots with elderflower, blackcurrant and nut oil. Dinner runs ten or twelve courses, and Nicole Schmidthaler, who hosts the room, recommends wines from her own favourites or from the cellar's list of German estates.
The restaurant Klassenzimmer occupies the former schoolrooms and seats up to 30 guests. The adjoining winter garden seats 18 and offers a separate three-course rustic menu. Petrol-blue armchairs stand at sturdy wooden tables, and historical photographs hang in the hallway. Cooking classes are also available.
