The story
Auerbachs Keller - Großer Keller at Grimmaische Str. 2-4 in Leipzig is a Saxon restaurant in cellars with a long literary past, and the Schlemmer Atlas awarded it 1,5 Kochlöffel in 2026.
The Großer Keller serves mainly classic Saxon dishes à la carte, alongside regional and international specialties. The website asks guests to guess how many Rouladen the kitchen serves in a year. Separate salons handle set menus of three or four courses and buffets of Saxon and international delicacies.
Four historic Weinstuben, dating from the 16th to 19th centuries, open for groups of 20 or more. Vaulted ceilings, ceiling paintings and long tables keep the feel of the 18th and 19th centuries. Goethe's "Faust" made the cellar famous. The Mephisto Bar in the Mädler Passage serves house-baked goods and coffee by day and cocktails in the evening.
