The story
Zur Waage M.E.B. sits at Neue Straße 1 in Leer, in the old weighhouse beside the Museum Harbor. The North German kitchen is listed as Recommended in the Michelin Guide for 2026.
Mario E. Brüggemann began his cook's apprenticeship at the Waage on 4 August 1999. He then worked in star kitchens across Germany and opened his own restaurant in Kiel in 2012. In 2020 it received the Michelin Guide's first Green Star for sustainable work. Since January 2021 he has run the Leer house as its leaseholder.
The menu stays close to regional classics: Grünkohl, Snirtje, labskaus, Scholle and Rote Grütze. The Schlemmer Atlas, which gave the restaurant 2.5 Kochlöffel in 2026, also points to the sole fillet. Most of what reaches the plate is made in-house. The rest comes from regional suppliers who work by hand. The kitchen runs on green electricity and energy-efficient equipment.
The historic building is comfortably elegant, and the harbor setting gives the dining room a view that changes with the seasons. A terrace serves guests outdoors on the same days as the restaurant, with lunch bookings possible inside as well.
