The story
La Société, at Kyffhäuser Straße 53 in Cologne, is a modern French kitchen that earned one Michelin Star in 2026. The restaurant sits in the Kwartier Latäng student quarter, close to Barbarossaplatz, and works as a small upscale bistro with serious ambitions.
Leon Hofmockel has run the kitchen since 2021. His cooking rests on French technique, refined with modern textures, quiet touches of acidity and clear flavors. In the evening the menu runs to five or seven courses, while lunch is a bistro menu of three or four. Schlemmer Atlas gave the restaurant 4 Kochlöffel in 2026 and singled out the seven-course tasting menu with Mieral chicken, saddle of venison and wild-caught fish.
Balfego tuna belly arrives with N25 Oscietra caviar, smoked crème fraîche and Koju chive vinaigrette. The pigeon is paired with Jerusalem artichoke purée, radicchio salad, sunflower seed pesto and yuzu oil. For dessert there is a caramel apple built around apple sorbet, lemon verbena and calvados sabayon. The menu follows the seasons, so expect it to change.
The dining room is lime green, lit softly and hung with plenty of artwork. A half-open kitchen and a curved marble bar give it a relaxed, bistro feel. The wine list carries around 400 selections with a French focus, and a house-made non-alcoholic pairing sits alongside the wine pairing. The whole restaurant can be booked privately outside regular hours for up to 35 guests.
