The story
Zum Riesen sits at Rheinstraße 54 in Kandel, where the Wenz family runs a traditional hotel restaurant with a fusion and international kitchen. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded it 2,5 Kochlöffel for 2026. The house was first recorded as an inn in 1696, and the family still runs it with the same hospitality.
The family knows its suppliers by name and talks with them often. That contact shapes a menu that tries to be inventive without losing the character of each ingredient. Spices and unusual pairings appear alongside classic international technique. The Schlemmer Atlas notes a dedicated vegan menu, and the restaurant also lists vegetarian options.
In summer, the garden restaurant is the main draw. Dogs are welcome on request, with advance notice. Private dining is available for groups, and larger celebrations can be booked. Michelin lists the restaurant as Recommended for 2026, which places it among the guide's regional recommendations.
The wine list pairs top regional wines with international finds. Several estates from the surrounding villages are represented, including Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan in Deidesheim, with Rieslings and a few reds. Wines are also poured by the glass in 0.2 l measures, which suits a long meal.
