The story
Am Osterfeuer at Hellerweg 35 in Herford is an international kitchen with Westphalian roots, listed as Michelin Recommended in 2026. The house has been in the Dunker family for four generations.
The building began over 100 years ago as a bakery. Today Hans-Jörg Dunker, whom regulars call Hansi, cooks what he describes as young Westphalian cuisine with influences from around the world. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded 2 Kochlöffel in 2026, pointing to the choice between traditional Westphalian comfort food and creative Mediterranean cooking, served in up to five courses.
The set menu runs three to five courses. A spring version pairs potato foam soup and fresh truffle with shellfish cannelloni, then grilled veal fillet with morel cream and rösti. It closes with a Tahitian vanilla parfait and rhubarb. The à la carte list runs from beef tartare with quail egg to Icelandic skrei in mustard foam with sauerkraut mash. Veal schnitzel and a chef's cheeseburger sit alongside them, and the chocolate soufflé has a liquid centre.
The main dining room has the feel of a Wirtshaus, with a Stammtisch and plenty of wood. Tables near the bar suit guests who like a word with the host. The Kaminzimmer is brighter and quieter, set with tables for couples or family birthdays. A hall seats more than 100 for weddings and larger gatherings, and in summer the terrace serves wine and cold Pils outdoors.
