The story
Chambao is a modern fusion restaurant at Dreikönigstraße 1 in Heidelberg, listed as Michelin Recommended for 2026. It sits in the old town, a few steps from the Alte Brücke.
The kitchen works around sharing. The Schlemmer Atlas gave Chambao 2.5 Kochlöffel in 2026 and describes a young, modern restaurant with creative cooking. For two guests, six to eight plates arrive together and go in the centre of the table. Cuisine is listed as fusion, international and Mediterranean, so the plates are free to wander.
A six-course dinner takes the city as its subject. Each dish refers to a place or a person from Heidelberg's history. The starter nods to the romance of past centuries, the main course to the freedom movements, and the dessert is a declaration of love to the city. You can choose a classic or a vegetarian version. An aperitif, a greeting from the kitchen and water are included, and wine or non-alcoholic pairings are optional. Printed texts accompany each course in German or English.
Chambao is a Spanish word for a simple palm roof of sugarcane leaves, the kind people cook and eat under at the beach with family. That idea of eating together runs through the sharing concept. The same team runs Chambino at Neckarstaden 52, a tapas bar with modern takes on Spanish classics and a view of the Alte Brücke.
