The story
Mühlenhelle - Bistro in Gummersbach pairs a modern French kitchen with Austrian bistro cooking at Hohler Straße 1 in Dieringhausen. The Michelin Guide awarded the house one star in 2026, and the restaurant is cooked by Michael Quendler and his team.
Michael Quendler cooks straightforwardly, with a light hand. Der Feinschmecker praised scallops with peas, mushrooms and bacon, where sweetness and spice meet umami. The veal Tafelspitz arrives with spinach pasta and Parmesan, classic in approach and delicate in texture.
Quendler grew up in Klagenfurt with Austrian cooking, and the bistro keeps that tradition. Schlemmer Atlas names frittata soup, Viennese schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn among the dishes made fresh each day. Vegetarian and vegan dishes sit on the bistro menu too, and Sunday and holiday visitors can order typical Austrian pastries with coffee.
The traditional building has parquet floors and antiques, and the service is calm and attentive. Birgitta Quendler, a trained sommelier, oversees the Vinothek, where around 700 selections lean toward German and Austrian producers. The Vinothek also hosts small private groups of up to 10. In warmer months, the garden terrace has white parasols and a playground for children.
