The story
Wirtshaus zur Sonne is a Badische kitchen in Freiburg, Germany, at Talstr. 103, 79286 Glottertal, and it holds a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026. The inn has operated for more than 350 years, and its Black Forest cooking draws on meat, game and herbs from the surrounding Glotter Valley.
Meat, game and herbs from the valley anchor the menu, and the kitchen works with wild from local hunting. Hand-scraped Spätzle and Brägele appear alongside dishes from the oven and a Sunday roast. Fresh fish comes in daily, and salads and vegetarian plates sit on the card too.
The original Schwarzwald Stube has a tiled stove and wood paneling, and the Schlemmer Atlas gives the house 2.5 Kochlöffel for 2026. The sunny terrace looks out over Black Forest heights and Glottertal vineyards. Guests can order regional and international wines, a cold Pils, or a Viertele from the wine list.
Fridays bring a short lunch menu that changes week to week, with soup or salad and dessert, offered as fish, meat or vegetarian. A four-course surprise menu is available by advance order only. Next door, DAS.KIOSK takes walk-ins without reservations for snacks, beer and cocktails.
