The story
Restaurant 1831 at August-Thyssen-Str. 51 in Essen serves modern French cooking inside Schlosshotel Hugenpoet, a 17th-century water castle. Michelin lists the restaurant as Recommended for 2026, and Schlemmer Atlas awarded it three Kochlöffel the same year.
Dominik Schab has shaped the castle kitchen since 2003, according to the hotel's history page. The restaurant opened in 2021 in the left conservatory and was awarded two Gault Millau toques shortly after. The house calls its approach fine dining reimagined, relaxed and a little unexpected. The team tastes each new menu together before it reaches guests.
The Schlemmer Atlas describes exposed brick walls and large windows that look out over the castle grounds. Nadine Behrmann has led the restaurant as sommelier and restaurant manager since October 1, 2025. She meets Schab once a week to review guest feedback and plan the coming days.

Coffee and cake with a view of the castle. In the evening, you can enjoy an authentic Wiener Schnitzel or a pan-fried zander fillet. After all, caviar and champagne would also be provided.
