The story
Jean, at Wilhelmstraße 13 in Eltville am Rhein, serves classic French cuisine inside the Hotel Frankenbach and holds one Michelin star (2026). The restaurant takes its name from the nickname of chef Johannes Frankenbach, the third generation of his family to run the house.
Johannes Frankenbach cooks in a straightforward classic French style with Mediterranean accents. The menu changes with the seasons and draws on regional produce. The family has owned the hotel since 1948, and the restaurant sits alongside a café with its own pastry kitchen.
Starters have included foie gras terrine with pear, pistachio and brioche, and a Breton fish soup with rouille and croutons. Mains have featured saddle of salt-meadow lamb with an olive crust and thyme jus, and a truffled guinea fowl breast with gnocchi. Guests can order à la carte, or choose a gourmet menu of three to seven courses or a seasonal menu of three to five.
The dining room is a former wine tavern, and the staff serve with courtesy and warmth. In summer, meals move to the plane-tree courtyard. The wine list focuses on Rheingau, German and French bottles, with older vintages and a particular emphasis on Bordeaux and Burgundy.
