The story
Freilinger Wirt is a World Cuisine restaurant in Eggenfelden, Germany, at Hofmarkstraße 5 in Mitterskirchen, and it received a Michelin Recommended mention for 2026. The name has stood for Wirtshaus tradition since 1870, and the family kitchen now combines that heritage with a more modern regional approach.
Michael Freilinger returned to the family house in 2015 after training as a master butcher and cooking in starred restaurants. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded the restaurant 2 Kochlöffel for 2026, describing a kitchen that is both traditional and creative. Everything is still cooked fresh, and the menu keeps familiar ingredients while adding new flavours from outside the region.
Herbs and wild herbs come from the family's own garden and from neighbours with green thumbs. Fish arrives from the Bretträger and Brandmühle fish farms, eggs from the Heumeier free-range farm, and ducks from the Lugeder poultry farm. Schnapps comes from the Naturbrennerei Engel distillery in the Rottal-Inn district, and the wine list draws on Vinothek Wahre.Werte.
The rooms follow a modern Bavarian farmhouse style, with a restaurant, a winter garden and a hall for weddings and larger celebrations. In summer the beer garden is the place for a long, slow evening. The team's service is warm and familiar, which suits both a quiet dinner and a family gathering.
