The story
Almer Schlossmühle at Schlossstraße 13 in Brilon cooks Austrian food with a Sauerland accent, and the Michelin Guide listed it with a Bib Gourmand in 2026. Martin Steiner runs the house in the village of Alme.
The Wiener Schnitzel is cut from veal back. Two very thin cutlets are fried in clarified butter and served with cold-stirred wild lingonberries and a lukewarm potato and cucumber salad. Wiener Backhendel, beef tatar with mustard cream and Carinthian Kasnudeln with curd filling and brown butter sit alongside it. The Schlemmer Atlas gave three Kochlöffel in 2026 for the way Sauerland flavors meet Austria here.
The spring 2026 menu is built around a Lenten tasting format. It opens with wild garlic cream soup or a field salad with raspberry chili dressing and fried king prawns. Braised duck in Asian style, with vegetable noodles and curry sauce, follows. Dessert is the Walzertraum, a Linzer-style tartlet with vanilla pumpkin seed ice cream and apricot sorbet. The full menu is 76 euros, and the same kitchen also handles takeaway and catering.
The building dates from about 1870 to 1880. It worked as a sawmill until 1900 and as a grain mill until 1964, and it supplied the village with electricity until 1958. After a thorough restoration in 1997, it opened as a restaurant in January 1998. The Schlemmer Atlas calls the rustic interior elegant, and a dinner here can run to five courses.
