The story
Lutter & Wegner Gendarmenmarkt serves German cooking with Austrian influence at Charlottenstr. 56 in Berlin, and it holds 2 Kochlöffel in the Schlemmer Atlas 2026.
The kitchen works from bourgeois German traditions and takes its cues from modern ideas. Seasons shape much of the menu. In summer the house serves small chanterelles and porcini, hand-picked for quality, with wines from Germany and Austria. The terrace, enlarged for the season, looks out over the square and its two cathedrals.
Wood paneling, white tablecloths and floor-to-ceiling wine racks define the dining room. Three central pillars carry paintings by Elvira Bach, Rainer Fetting and Salomé, under the motto "Wein, Weib und Gesang." The house opened as a wine business in 1811, and E.T.A. Hoffmann once lived here. Its cellar vaults later inspired the setting of Offenbach's opera "Hoffmanns Erzählungen."
