The story
Malteser Komturei at Herrenstrunden 23 in Bergisch Gladbach serves Mediterranean cooking with a Bergisch accent, and the Schlemmer Atlas awarded it 2 Kochlöffel in 2026. The restaurant occupies a former Johanniter commandery, with a terrace that looks out over the water.
Head chef Ralph Balzer describes his food as modern Bergisch cuisine with Mediterranean inspiration. The menu follows that line. Handmade pasta sits beside Wiener Schnitzel, and there are Italian starters such as vitello tonnato and a Sicilian octopus salad with orange and fennel. The Schlemmer Atlas notes the same mix of regional tradition and Mediterranean dishes.
Mains include monkfish medallions with pak choi and crab sauce, rabbit leg with creamed savoy cabbage and gnocchi, and braised Irish short rib with port wine onions. Pasta runs from tagliolini with truffle sauce to potato gnocchi "Himmel un Ääd" with blood sausage and poached apple. For dessert there is crème brûlée made with Tahitian vanilla, or a plate of Munster, Pont-l'Évêque and Brillat-Savarin.
On Sundays the kitchen puts on a large brunch. Afternoons bring cake, waffles and the traditional Bergische Kaffeetafel. The building dates back to the Johanniter order in the late 13th century. It was rebuilt in baroque style in 1684 and again after a fire in 1945. The 200 m² terrace faces the lake, and the wine list is a particular point of pride.
