The story
Berchtesgadener Esszimmer at Nonntal 7 in Berchtesgaden serves country cooking with French and international touches. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded it three Kochlöffel in 2026.
The restaurant occupies a 500-year-old house just outside the town center. Its vaulted dining room feels cozy and a little nostalgic. Seasonal ingredients shape the menus, and the kitchen often works with the whole animal. The Michelin Guide lists the address as Recommended for 2026.
Maximilian Kühbeck is the proprietor. Since February 2022 the kitchen's chef has been an appointed Toques d'Or chef, a title one cannot apply for and can only be invited to hold. The kitchen calls its approach a cosmopolitan regional cuisine. Craft, local produce and Alpine culinary heritage come first, and selected products from elsewhere in Europe fill in the gaps. Its world cuisine leanings stay grounded in that regional base.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays at 18:00, pupils and students can book a five-course surprise menu at one of the kitchen tables, for one to four guests. Sitting there lets them ask about the cooking and watch the work behind the scenes. Each guest receives a certificate afterward. The price is roughly a third below the regular menu. Booking needs a week's notice, and a student ID is checked on arrival.
