The story
Rotes Ross serves Franconian country cooking at Würzburger Straße 3 in Marktbergel, near Bad Windsheim, Germany. The restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand (2026) for good-quality, good-value cooking.
Thomas Bogner earned his Küchenmeister at the Brenners Parkhotel in Baden-Baden. He cooks Franconian dishes and adds new ideas and local ingredients. Everything is prepared fresh in house. The Schlemmer Atlas awards the restaurant 2.5 Kochlöffel and notes that the kitchen keeps to Franconian traditions at moderate prices.
The menu is built around regional produce, with steaks, grilled plates and seasonal dishes. Rumpsteak and Ribeye come in 200 g or 300 g portions, finished with herb and garlic butter. Other dishes include Zwiebelrostbraten with butter spätzle, pikeperch under a herb crust with saffron sauce, and ravioli filled with mountain cheese and herbs. A vegetarian menu is also offered.
The building is a country inn that dates back to the 16th century, and it was restored after a long period of decline. The restaurant has two dining rooms, a small hall and a vaulted cellar. The Grüner Salon upstairs seats up to 60 guests and suits weddings and anniversaries. A cooking school hosts courses and wine tastings throughout the year.
