The story
Steinheuers Restaurant, at Landskroner Straße 110 in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, holds two Michelin stars in the 2026 guide. Its classic French cooking is anchored in the Ahr Valley and served in the village of Heppingen.
Hans Stefan Steinheuer and his wife Gabriele have run this country inn since 1985. Their son-in-law Christian Binder has been head chef since 2015, and he adds roots and blossoms from local gardens to the house style. Both men look to the homeland for many dishes, yet they buy international premium ingredients without hesitation. Guests choose between a 4-course and a 7-course menu.
One menu is titled "Roots", and local vegetables and regional meat form its base. A smoked Onsen-style farm egg comes with macaroni in lapsang souchong broth and mushrooms. The scallop is paired with peas, sea urchin foam, crustacean consommé and caviar. Eifel venison loin is the classic, and the finale is quince with quark and caramelized honey.
The wine list leans heavily on the Ahr and the rest of Germany. The Burgundy selection reflects Hans Stefan Steinheuer's passion. His daughter Désirée, the sommelière, adds newer finds from around the world.
Gray armchairs sit beneath a ceiling woven with gold thread, an elegant room that avoids stiffness. Gabriele Steinheuer leads the service, and the family atmosphere shows in the way tables are looked after.
