The story
Christian's Restaurant - Gasthof Grainer stands at Dorfstraße 1 in Kirchdorf (for navigation, enter Alte-Schulstr. 2). The family inn serves French-leaning European cooking and holds a Michelin star in 2026.
Christian Grainer has cooked here for more than 30 years, pairing regional produce with French polish. Much of the work happens on an old wood-fired stove. Mushroom pickers bring baskets of porcini to the kitchen door, and a local hunter delivers whole deer. Nose-to-tail cooking is simply the house habit. The tasting format is a surprise menu of three to six courses.
In summer, a garden pineapple tomato may arrive on sheep's ricotta cream with pine nuts, chanterelles and basil. The main course turns Bavarian in a contemporary way: Wammerl (pork belly) from a Lockinger pig with crackling skin, pavé potato, king oyster mushrooms prepared two ways and pak choi. Two sauces follow, a roast pork jus and an onion foam.
Christiane Grainer is the sommelière and host. Her cellar holds around 1,000 wines, with vintage depth and rarities. Gault Millau named her Hostess of the Year in 2018.
The Grainer family has owned this inn since the 16th century. The Stuben mix Bavarian tradition with a refined setting, and in good weather the terrace under old chestnut trees opens for up to 40 guests. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded four Kochlöffel in 2026.
