The story
Izakaya, at Selska cesta 90b in Zagreb, received a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2026 for good quality, good value cooking. The Japanese contemporary kitchen sits outside the city centre and mixes traditional technique with current trends.
The menu is organised by format: nigiri, hosomaki, uramaki, futomaki, signature rolls, bowls, buns and noodles. Gault&Millau gave the restaurant 14 points in 2026 and singled out the classic sushi, from nigiri with salmon, tuna or prawns to the larger rolls. Gyoza come in pork, chicken or vegetable versions, cooked so they stay juicy and then fried for texture. The miso soup is where the umami starts.
The bar covers a varied beer list, a long wine list with many Croatian varieties, and sake. Cocktails build on local classics, and the house also pours a broad range of Japanese whiskeys. Desserts are made for the restaurant by Torteria Macaron.
The name means a casual place for small plates and drinks, yet the portions here are generous. The interior combines minimalist Japanese lines with a comfortable, modern layout. Waiters walk guests through the menu and suggest a drink for each dish. The space suits a business lunch, a quiet dinner or a small family celebration.
