The story
King's Joy, at 2 Wudaoying Hutong in Yonghegong, Beijing, is a vegetarian Chinese restaurant that earned two Michelin stars in 2026 for excellent cooking. The menu runs as a tasting progression of vegetables, mushrooms and seasonal greens, with each meal built from one course to the next.
Tasting menus run from 8 to 12 courses. The base is Chinese cooking with a light influence from Southeast Asia. A diner who reviewed the meal counted seared, steamed, stir-fried, braised and slow-cooked techniques across the courses. The kitchen's marination and fermentation give the vegetables their depth.
Mushrooms run through much of the menu. Sichuan mushroom jerky appears among the pre-meal bites, and slow-cooked white king oyster mushroom comes with a wild mushroom bun. Stir-fried seasonal greens arrive with a Malaysian curry sauce, and the meal ends with a homemade fresh mango and milk pudding.
The reviewer described an entrance wrapped in mist, opposite the Lama Temple, with a harp melody drifting from the dining room. Service was less polished. The same review noted that staff knew little about the ingredients and that courses arrived out of order. The Smart Green Guide awards King's Joy 4 Radishes for 2026.
