The story
Down Home is a modern cuisine restaurant at 135299 9th Line in Markdale, where a farm-to-table tasting menu earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026. The farmhouse dining room sits in Grey County, and the menu follows the growing season.
Hannah Harradine and Joel Gray started Sumac & Salt in 2019 and later opened the farmhouse restaurant under the name Down Home. The name honours Joel's grandmother's house in Nova Scotia. Joel's cooking grew from years in kitchens, and he came to see the connections between producers as the real foundation of a meal. The menu changes each week, built from what is growing, what the kitchen forages, and what local farmers are excited about.
Dinner is a single seating of ten courses, served on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Ingredients come from Grey County producers, with an emphasis on organic and regenerative farming. In warmer months, the evening begins outdoors in the garden. Vegetarian guests are invited to visit when vegetables are at their peak, since the kitchen works within the seasons.
The beverage program focuses on Canadian bottles, with a changing Ontario wine pairing. With no more than 20 seats per evening, the meal feels intimate and typically runs three to three and a half hours. The restaurant also holds a 1 Radish rating from the We're Smart Green Guide for 2026. Children aged 10 and up are welcome, as there is no children's menu.
