The story
Bassud is a modern cuisine restaurant at Zuidstraat 42 in Torhout, listed as Recommended in the Michelin Guide for 2026. It opened at the end of 2017 and was the first restaurant in town to earn a Michelin mention.
Chef Jan Devos cooks with local produce and leans on charcoal grilling and several fermentation techniques. The kitchen calls its style craft gastronomy that stays approachable. Gault&Millau gives it 14 out of 20 for 2026 and describes a refined local cuisine in the center of Torhout.
The current dinner menu opens with gravad lax of cod, kohlrabi, sour cream, cucumber and lovage. Haddock arrives with white asparagus, North Sea shrimp and wild garlic. A signature oyster is paired with Roman chervil, cauliflower and beurre blanc, and veal loin comes with savory, broccoli and beech mushroom. Dessert is strawberry with rhubarb, yoghurt, pumpkin seed and verbena. Dinner is four or five courses, and lunch has shorter formulas.
Michèlle runs the dining room and chooses wines and other drinks to match each dish. A separate room, Petit Bassud, hosts family gatherings and private dinners.
