The story
EssenCiel is a modern French restaurant at Bondgenotenlaan 114 in Leuven, listed with one Michelin Star in the 2026 guide. Niels Brants leads the kitchen, and the cooking is contemporary and built around the seasons.
Brants and Romina Charels opened the restaurant in 2013, and the team still starts from the product. Gault&Millau gives it 16 points for 2026 and describes an elegant townhouse with a city garden. Amuse-bouches come from the open kitchen, among them a nori crisp with marinated salmon trout.
The menu changes every four weeks. A recent version pairs shrimp "Quisquilla" with tomato and aji amarillo, and Balfego tuna with grilled cucumber and koshihikari. Blue lobster arrives with sweetbread and zucchini, and pork "Ibaïama" with white asparagus and mustard. Dessert is apricot with sheep's milk and honey. Lunch runs from three to six courses, while dinner starts at five.
Pairings are poured by the glass, either 12 cl or a smaller 6 cl "bob" glass. An alcohol-free pairing is available, and a dessert wine can replace the standard pour. Cheese can stand in for dessert or be added as an extra course. Allergies and dietary needs are accommodated when mentioned in advance.
