The story
Resto 136 in Hoogstraten, Belgium, serves Asian fusion and French dishes at Vrijheid 136, 2320 Hoogstraten. Gault&Millau awarded it 13.5 for 2026, and it also holds a Michelin Recommended listing for the same year.
Chef Niels Van Mechelen builds his dishes on a classic base and adds his own character through detailed flavours. Gault&Millau singles out the respect he shows for the product. Its reviewers also highlight pairings that do not follow the expected script, which gives the French-leaning foundation an Asian-inflected edge.
The five-course menu costs €94 per person, alongside a changing à la carte selection. Lunch is a weekly rotating menu of a starter and a main for €43 per person, and the dishes are posted on Instagram and Facebook each week. On Saturday evenings, only the five-course menu is served.
Guests are welcomed by Niels and Laura, and the space offers air conditioning and outdoor seating. The house gin, also named 136, takes its concept from the restaurant's numbers. Saturday afternoons and Sundays are available for private parties, while gift vouchers are sold only as physical cards.
