The story
Gamskogelhütte Fine Dining by Stefan Lastin is a modern cuisine restaurant in Sankt Michael im Lungau, Austria, at Gamskogel, Rennweg am Katschberg, 9863. Gault&Millau awarded it 16.5 points in 2026, and the Michelin Guide lists it as Recommended in the same year.
Stefan Lastin leads the kitchen as head chef, with Sinja Proprentner as sous chef. The team prepares every dish fresh on the hut, using herbs and vegetables from the garden in Rennweg or from regional suppliers. The bread is sourdough, baked as needed, and the bacon and hard sausages are made in-house each spring and autumn.
Gault&Millau recommends the surprise menu. Its critics singled out a scallop from Scotland served with a coral cream, and Ikejime trout set against red cabbage, caviar and set buttermilk. Lastin's Kasnudeln is daring yet unconventional, and the foie gras is seared and served with smoked eel tartare and a creole cream. The wine pairing drew praise, though the critics felt the service could be more elegant.
The hut stands at 1,850 m on the Katschberg, on the border between Carinthia and Salzburg, with the Nockberge and the foothills of the Hohe Tauern around it. It began in the 1970s as a small hut without running water or electricity, and was expanded to its current size in four building phases. Today it is heated with geothermal energy, solar panels and wood, and its water comes from three springs the family captured.
