The story
Crockers in Tring, Hertfordshire, cooks modern British food at 74 High Street and holds 3 AA Rosettes for 2026. The restaurant started as a trial pop-up in nearby Potten End before settling in Tring in 2018.
Head chef Scott Barnard arrived after nine years at Colettes at The Grove in Watford. He finished second on MasterChef: The Professionals in 2015 and again on The Rematch in 2018. His modern British cooking is precise, with fine tweezered detail and a clear respect for seasonal produce.
Tasting menus open with small snacks and a mini loaf of crusty bread made with beer from Tring Brewery. Gently cooked Cornish turbot comes with mussels and smoked pike roe. Anjou pigeon is served with celeriac, buckwheat, pear and a honey vinegar that cuts through the richness. Dessert reworks rhubarb cheesecake with rhubarb gel, rhubarb sorbet and rose meringue.
The chef's table seats 16 on a three-sided counter, under copper-clad walls and hanging lamps that light the pass. It sits up two flights of stairs. The high-ceilinged ground-floor room is calmer and more relaxed. The cellar bar serves cocktails and a list of around 50 wines, and guests can drop in from 19:30 without a reservation.
