The story
The French Table in Surbiton serves modern French cooking at 85 Maple Road, KT6 4AW, and it holds 2 AA Rosettes for 2026 for culinary excellence. The restaurant has been open since 2001, when Eric and Sarah Guignard began it with a focus on good food, wine and attentive service.
Richard Giles is now head chef, promoted from within the team, while Eric Guignard remains at the front of the business. The Good Food Guide describes a kitchen that pairs heritage bistro cooking with a more contemporary style. The AA inspector singled out dressed-to-impress modern dishes and breads, and the pastry benefits from the sibling bakery, The French Tarte, next door.
Recent plates have included charred Cornish mackerel with salt-baked beetroot and beef fillet with glazed ox cheek. Evening menus lean further into creativity, with mi-cuit chalk stream trout served with avocado crème fraîche and seaweed jelly, and Cornish lamb with minted courgette purée. Desserts range from dark chocolate fondant to vanilla cheesecake with pear compôte and a green apple and star-anise sorbet. Diners can choose a three-course menu or a five-course tasting menu, and the wine list leans on French regions with tasting notes from the team.
