The story
The Angel is a modern European restaurant with rooms at Hetton, North Yorkshire, BD23 6LT, near Skipton, and it holds one Michelin star in the 2026 guide. The kitchen is led by chef-patron Michael Wignall.
Wignall took over the pub with his wife Johanna in 2018. He has won a Michelin star in every kitchen he has headed since 1993, including two stars each at The Latymer at Pennyhill Park and Gidleigh Park. Today the cooking runs as an à la carte menu or as multi-course tasting menus at lunch and dinner. The Angel ranks 47th in the 2026 National Restaurant Awards.
Meals begin with snacks, freshly made sourdough and a selection of cultured butters. Dishes have included tomato textures (fresh, cooked, dried and as a consommé) with lovage ice and basil. Shetland crab comes in buttermilk dashi with oscietra caviar, green strawberries and herb oil. Guinea fowl is paired with roasted hen of the woods mushrooms and puréed corn. Lamb arrives with its tongue, plus salsa verde wrapped in lettuce and finished with anchovy crumb.
The pub dates to the 15th century and sits on a quiet road in the village of Hetton. Inside are three dining rooms with polished concrete floors, lacquered oak tables and soft grey leather seating. Windows look over the Dales. Nine bedrooms make it practical to stay on and explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
