The story
The Tickled Trout is an English gastro pub at 33 Valley Road, Barlow, Derbyshire S18 7SL, in the Sheffield area. The Good Food Guide named it a Local Gem in 2026, and it also holds 2 AA Rosettes for culinary excellence.
Owner Chris Mapp works with farmers, growers and fishermen from Derbyshire and nearby. The fish is the exception. Dayboat fish arrives from Cornwall, caught in the morning and delivered the same day. Pizzas and pastas show the kitchen's Italian leanings, with crisp-edged sourdough bases and toppings adapted to British tastes.
Reviewers single out the sea bream with salty sea vegetables, dill sauce and chive mash, and the Sunday roasts. Arancini and garlicky dough balls make good openers. The quattro formaggi uses Lancashire Blue, and the sticky toffee pudding comes with malt ice cream.
