The story
Gidleigh Park (Okehampton) is a country house hotel on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, at Chagford, Devon TQ13 8HH. Its modern British kitchen holds one Michelin star in 2026.
Dinner is a five-course menu at £135 per person, served Tuesday to Saturday from 7pm to 9pm. The sample menu opens with trout, crab apple, pine and hawthorn, then moves to rabbit with sorrel and chestnut, and fallow with juniper and sloe. Honey with medlar and sheep curd closes it. The kitchen cooks to the seasons and to the landscape of the Teign and Dartmoor, with the kitchen garden close at hand.
Lunch is five courses at £69, with slightly shorter hours at weekends. The lounge menu runs daily and is more relaxed. Expect mussels with cider, garlic and tarragon, or dry-aged rib eye with smoked bone marrow and red wine sauce. Afternoon tea (£52, or £75 with Champagne) is served with views over garden and valley. The AA awarded three Rosettes in 2026, and the British cooking here comfortably earns them.
The Tudor-style house sits on the upper River Teign within 107 acres of gardens and woodland. It was rebuilt in 1925 and became a hotel in 1955. The dining room asks for smart casual dress, with no jeans or trainers.
