The story
Hambleton Hall, at Hambleton, LE15 8TH, is a modern British restaurant in Oakham that holds a Michelin star (2026) and 4 AA Rosettes. The dining room sits in a house dating to 1881, on a peninsula above Rutland Water, and the kitchen has been led by Aaron Patterson for more than twenty years.
Patterson's menus lean on seasonal produce and a sense of lightness. The walled kitchen garden grows herbs, salad vegetables and soft fruit, and in summer courgette flowers reach the kitchen daily. That close link to the garden shows in the plates.
Early summer menus have included San Marzano tomatoes with gazpacho and a little basil ice cream. A terrine of heritage carrots comes with spiced carrot ice cream and coriander oil, while poached halibut is served with wild garlic, egg yolk purée and morels. The kitchen notes that its fish is served warm, not hot. Dessert has ranged from a featherlight blackcurrant soufflé to a walnut whip with passion fruit marshmallow when available.
Fifteen rooms sit within the house, and the grounds cover 17 acres with a south-facing terrace and a parterre designed in 1995. The dining room seats 60 on mixed tables or 30 at one long table. Head sommelier Patrick Cooper leads the wine service, and Coravin Argon preservation keeps a range of bottles open for wines by the glass. The Wines of the Moment list offers ten whites, ten reds and a rosé at the lower end of the price range.
