The story
Benedicts is a modern British restaurant at 9 St Benedicts Street in Norwich, rated Very Good in The Good Food Guide for 2026. Richard and Katja Bainbridge run the sleek city-centre room, where the tasting menus are the main draw.
Richard Bainbridge, originally from Norwich, worked for Michel Roux Senior at the Waterside Inn and later became head chef at Galton Blackiston's Morston Hall. He opened Benedicts with Katja in June 2015. Head chef Ashley Williamson also trained at Morston Hall, and the two share a focus on seasonal Norfolk produce. The restaurant holds 3 AA Rosettes for 2026.
The menus move course by course, starting with umami-led teasers and a rice cracker topped with salmon roe and sherry mousse. A winter visit brought local lamb with truffled Jerusalem artichoke and Cornish halibut in Champagne sauce. For the centrepiece, diners choose between garlicky sirloin, turbot Nantua or a mushroom tart with red onion jus. The signature pudding is Nanny Bush's trifle, made with rhubarb, raspberries, spiced Cognac and ginger. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are equally inventive, including truffled salsify spaghetti.
The dining room has stripped floors, contemporary furniture and a lively buzz. Parasol-shaded tables outside suit warm early evenings. Service is described as relaxed and welcoming. The Sewing Room, a first-floor space for 6 to 14 guests, hosts private dinners and small celebrations. The wine list includes some well-chosen glasses to start the evening.
