The story
Upstairs at the Mill is a modern British restaurant in Mildenhall, set in the restored Tuddenham Mill at High Street, Tuddenham, IP28 6SQ. The AA awarded it four rosettes for culinary excellence in 2026. The menu changes with the seasons and leans on fresh local produce.
Chef Patron Lee Bye grew up in the Fenland countryside and cooks with the produce of that region in mind. The kitchen describes its approach as field-to-fork, with dishes that aim for hearty flavours and clever combinations. Menus are rewritten as the seasons turn, so the dishes you see depend on the time of year.
The six course tasting menu is the fullest way through the kitchen, and a wine pairing can be added. Recent dishes have included smoked tuna carpaccio with Wye Valley asparagus and almond, and Norfolk Black lamb with imam bayildi and spider kale. Dessert might be Guinness toffee pudding with malted vanilla ice cream. A separate vegetarian menu offers hen of the wood mushroom with smoked yogurt and fregola.
The building was designed and built in 1775 and was converted into a restaurant in 1972. It sits in twelve acres of Suffolk countryside, where a willow tree is reflected in the millpond. Michelin lists the restaurant as Recommended for 2026. Meadow paths lead through the grounds, and the setting is calm enough to suit a quiet meal or a special occasion.
